Overview

The Radiography Program at the Medical Training Institute of New York is designed to prepare students to perform various radiographic examinations and procedures under the supervision of professional radiographers.

Students have the opportunity to gain both didactic knowledge and practical experience in routine radiography, trauma radiography, fluoroscopy, mammography, and tomography. In addition, elective rotations in nuclear medicine, ultrasound, angiography, computerized tomography (CT), cardiac catheterization, and MRI are also offered.

The Radiography Program is designed to prepare competent entry-level Radiographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior)learning domains for Radiography.

The core curriculum is structured to include an on-campus lecture component, an on-campus imaging laboratory component, and an off-campus integrated clinical component.

The final externship portion of the curriculum is structured to include supervised experiences in the clinical environment that require competencies, logs, and evaluations completed by the student. At the conclusion of the program, graduates who have diligently attended class and their externship, studied, and practiced their skills should have the skills to seek entry-level Radiologic Technologists.

What Radiologic Technologists Do

Radiologic Technologists work at doctors’ offices, hospitals, labs, and imaging centers to operate X-rays, CT, mammograms, sonograms, and MRI machines among other imaging equipment. Their role is to coach the patient through a scan and use computers to collect information about their health. Radiologic Technicians are in charge of keeping patients and medical staff safe by appropriately preparing an exam room and outfitting all parties with the necessary protective equipment

Surgical technologists typically do the following:

  • Follow instructions from Physicians regarding which area of the patient’s body needs imaging
  • Talk the patient through the procedure and answer questions to lower their anxiety
  • Correctly position the patient, and adjust the imaging equipment to the specified position
  • Prevent unnecessary radiation exposure both to themselves and to the patient
  • Follow correct techniques and procedures such as patient shielding
  • Keep good patient records
  • Maintain radiology supplies inventory by checking stock, anticipating future needs, and placing orders
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment

Job Stability

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2021 to 2031, about as fast as the average for all occupations.

About 9,600 openings for surgical assistants and technologists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retiring.
